The weekend of 20th & 21st of October 2018 I dedicated to self-education in the sphere of genetics. I took part in a two day seminar that focused on population genetics and breeding domestic animals, particularly dogs.

The lecturers were academic workers from Animal Science Research Institute. Namely Mrs. A. Svitáková, M.Bráková, Z.Veselá who are long-time dog and small animal breeders. I can not either omit the senior lecturer Mr. L.Vostrý from the Department of Genetics and Breeding from The Czech University of Agriculture in Prague.

They revealed us the rules of genetics, variability and mutations. They explained the basic principles of classical genetics - Mendel laws and how to put them in our breeging practice. There was a very interesting lecture delivered and the main topic was" The Essence of DNA Tests". We learned a complete procedure from taking DNA samples to final results. The most helpful part of the lecture for me was the lecture dealing with "The genetics of dogs hair color". We were shown on concrete genetic interactions the essence of dogs hair color genetics.

I would like to apply the gained knowledge in my proper breeding. Mainly in the sphere of preventing genetic illnesses and strongly discussed inbreeding. Generaly siad, it was a high level seminar and it deepended my existing knowledge.

DSC 0708 kopieThis year the host of The European Dog Show was Poland. I was hesitating a lot whether to take a part or not, but finally the fact, that Warszawa isn´t too far, convinced me. I enrolled young Valentina to the show. Anyway I didn´t expect miracles, I just believed to enjoy our time.

According to my expectation, young female dogs were the second most numerous group. We met 18 young bitches from 6 countries and their quality was on a very high level.  All the more success was, that Valentina was shortlisted and got the recognition "Excelent".  Unfortunately we didn´t gain any of the first four prices, yet I´m satisfied how Valentina showed herself in this "high level" show.  I couldn´t stop admirig her movements on the blue carpet, her concentration and beauty. As if she knew, that something important had been happening and she completely forgot her "devilish" nature.

We received the title in black and white! Our young Valentina met the conditions and received the title "Czech Junior Beauty Champion". A great reward and satisfaction to a breeder for all the job and effort to show his dog in its best condition.

KV Whippet Klub4

The first autumn Sunday 23th September 2018 really deserved to be called an autumn Sunday. A rain, wind and cold welcomed us in the very morning and lingered the whole club show.

It was a small but perfectly organized show, richly supported by sponsors. There was a friendly and sweet atmosphere. Mrs. Marion Marpe from Germany assumed judging, a very pleasant and smiling lady who was friendly towards the dogs and their owners.

So I put on my wellington boots and I showed both of my whippet girls in their best possible. They were cold, shaking and all wet, but the title "Excelent" and beautiful opinions was worth it. The young Valentina received another CAJC and met the conditions for gaining "Junior Beauty CZ Champion". Then she became the best junior of the show - BOJ and gained the title "Junior Club Winner 2018". I´m so proud of my little girl! My sweetheart Karlyn won the third place in the open class.

Spesiálka Konopiště4 2018

The first autumn Saturday 22nd September 2018 Sighthound Speciality Show took place in Konopiště. We were familiar with this place and met a high number of hounds, this is the kind of events we can not miss with my girls! The weather was not summery at all. The sun was trying to warm us up a bit, but the cold autumn wind was bothering us all.

The show happened with the participation of foreign judges. Whippets were judged by Mr. Tomasz Kuszyk from Poland, who is a breed expert (kennel Synergy). His judgment was one of the most precise, I would say. He accurately examined every dog on the table, on the floor and in the movement.  He took his time to evaluate the movement of a particular dog member, from all sides and angles. He commented his evaluation and the owner got a feedback on the strengths and weaknesses of his dog. Both of me whippet girls received the mark "Excelent" and Valentina got the title CAJC (Certificat d´Aptitude au Junior Championat) and then she won the duel with another young male dog and became the winner of the BOJ title (Best of Junior Speciality Show). Thanks to this title Valentina reached the last third in the contest of Junior Beauty CZ Champion.

At the end of summer traditionally organized a two day club show of The Breeding Club of English Racing Hounds, took place at Slapy dam (CZ), in the campsite called Nová Živohošť.  As usual a lot of lovers of these beautiful dogs gathered.  Every day there were more than 80 dog members registered. The competition was huge, so I definitely appreciated, that my whippet girls were placed. The first place, as seen i the picture, unfortunately was not ours, but the rest of places belonged to us.

The show was honored by the judges Mr. Dr.Göran Bodegård and Mrs. Nenne Runsten (kennel Airescot) both from Sweden. It was a great privilege for me to meet this lady personally. She is an excellent breed specialist. I´m very happy she liked my whippet females.

Both shows were perfectly organized. Big thanks to the organizers and writers. Finally we got readable assessments!   We obtained a surprise on Saturday. The show was opened with a dressage show of Kladruber horses accompanied by music and riders. It was a wonderful spectacle. The horses and sighthounds have always matched together.

Saturday 15th September 2018 *** The Club Show with "Club Winner" granting ***

The first day of the show, which was granting the price "Club Winner" eighty-eight dog members were registered.  Eleven greyhounds and seventy-seven whippets. The competition among whippets was judged by a very kind Mrs. Nenne Runsten (kennel Airescot) from Sweden. She is a sweet older lady with a long time experience with whippet breeding. A lot of her dog offspring can be found today in pedigrees of successful European and World champions. As usual, both of my whippets reached the succes in the open and junior class. Great judge´s evaluations and the second and the third place delighted me. The icing on the cake was the assessment of our young Valentina with the result "stud bitch" with a standard height 46,5 cm.

Sunday 16th September  *** The Club Show ***

The second day of the show was successful as well. The blue sky and warm sun welcomed eighty-three dog members, twelve greyhounds and seventy-one whippets. That day the main judge became Mr.  Dr. Göran Bodegård. When seeing the first results, it was visible, that the judge had "a different kind of taste". Generally the judge considered "good nutritional condition" of certain dog members. When judging males, he put strong and big ones to the front. Concerning the females it was not this way. I was disappointed because my young Valentina god assessment "very good" as she was moving with her ears all the time. The assessment of Karlyn turned out better. She received the mark "excellent" and gained the fourth place.

The last holiday Sunday my girls and I enjoyed The National Dog Show in Olomouc (CZ).  A sunny day after a rainy night was embracing a beautiful exposition park Flora in Olomouc. A big gratitude belongs to organizers who were able to move this show from Brno back to Olomouc.

What can I say? In my opinion the show was a bit wild, anyway I met plenty of familiar human and dog faces.  I was able to chat with other breeders and to show my whippets which were in a great conditoin. The judge didn´t express any special interest of my whippet girls, but they got very nice assessments. As I often say, every judge has got his proper taste, no matter what about breed standard. And my girls were not for his taste this time.

Zámek Konopiště

Konopiště Castle has always been connected to dog breeding (cynology). It is situates to the middle of a game reserve full of trees and hunting and all these attracted our ancestors to organize hunts. The presence of as hunting dogs was a completely common thing. This tradition has survived until nowadays and that is why Konopiště Castle, precisely Nová Myslivna Restaurant, is the place where many cynological shows and events take place.

This weekend 18th-19th August 2018 The Club of Hound Breeders from Prague organized two shows:

FCI Central European Sighthound Show and Sighthound Club Show

Saturday 18th August  - *** FCI Central European Sighthound Show ***

The Central European Sighthound Show took place on Saturday and was hosting foreign judges. In my opinion the organizing Prague Club made a weak publicity which caused a low whippets attendance and this is not a common thing. My whippet girls were going fine. They received very nice rewards and assessments from the Slovenian judge Andrej Novak for the most demanding open and junior classes. The judge was kind and she behaved very sweetly and professionally towards dogs and their masters.

Sunday 19th August - *** Sighthound Club Show KCHCH Praha ***

This event was a real disaster. I was already warned that taking place in this event does not make sense. Anyway as I made the long journey to participate in Saturday show, I made use of this opportunity and took part in the Sunday show as well. The judge was Mrs. Michaela Pavlasková from Slovakia. In my opinion she no clue about beauty and elegance of a show whippet. And I won´t even mention the "blood-related issue" ruling this show. And what does it imply? My whippet girls that are more English looking with their long loins did not have any change to succeed as the preference of the judge were skinny short whippets. I arrived at a conclusion that beauty shows are based on a subjective opinion of a judge. I can 100% confirm that what is preferred by one judge can be rejected by the other. It brings me to a question: "Why do we have a breed standard if everyone interprets it in a different way?!" Anyway I do not attend the shows just to gain and be on an ego trip, I also want to enjoy it and meet my good old friends and those who suffer from the same underestimation as me and my doggies.

Yearly organized two-day club show "Beauty and Performance" was accompanied by the sunny weather and a friendly atmosphere this year. This time we only took part on Saturday exhibitions, but Sunday´s coursing was also included. During the Saturday Valentine also celebrated her first Birthday.

Both of my whippets have entered the most occupied classes, one in the junior class and the other one in the open class. They haven´t ended up so badly in such a great competition though.  The invitation for the contest was accepted by Mr. judge Kurt Summer from Austria. I don´t have a good feeling about his judging at all, just because all his opinions were almost everytime the same.
